American Apparel - Your Favorite T-Shirt

American Apparel has always been one of my favorite tees (and apparel, overall).  Here is their new Cotton Spandex Jersey Aerobic Top, the colors and sizes available.

I first discovered American Apparel a few years back when I purchased a concert t-shirt (Springsteen!). It was soft but well stitched and felt quite durable.  After a few washes, the shirt became 'my favorite'. I still have it - some 5 years later.  At first, I didn't even recognize the brand - I bought it because of the feel (and I'm quite a t-shirt detective when it comes to buying imprinted tees). 

I went through my supplier database and was happy to see that American Apparel was there! Happy me!  If you haven't experienced the difference - go visit one of their stores. (New store opening in Honolulu, HI.  And find you own favorite.

Wear Your LOGO on Your Sleeves

We received this product to review today.  It was one of the new products I saw at the PPAI Expo in Las Vegas in January.  I recently had a client who is reviewing this as a potential promotional item.  This dye sublimated arm sleeve is manufactured in the USA and provides UV protection (UPF 50+), moisture management and compression.

Can I just state here and now that we're ready to make a FASHION statement while keeping you safe from the sun?  Go for it!  High performance nylon spandex is going to rock your image.

Apparel Color is Focus in Unforgiving Economy

Trevose, Pennsylvania-based Broder announced innovation and major style trends are likely to take a backseat to value-based, quality brands, as the summer selling season approaches.

“There is no doubt that budget issues will play a greater role in this summer’s promotional campaigns,” noted Andrea Engel, vice president of merchandising for BroderBros.  “This is not a year for big innovation.  Rather, it is a time to offer creative suggestions that will help clients differentiate themselves and show value.”

On the horizon Engel noted she believes there will be a shift from dull, earthy tones to bright neon colors. “Color is something that will be very important this upcoming season. Not only will people look to bright, neon colors to cheer themselves up in this gloomy economy, but color costs very little and is a great way to update your promotion on a tight budget,” said Engel.

Engel also mentioned that eco-friendly apparel will continue to grow in popularity, noting that eco-friendly does not necessarily translate to higher costs. “There are still good values to be found in eco-wear.”

In terms of styling and silhouettes, Engel doesn’t see any dramatic changes coming.  Instead, she sees a shift to value brands which offer a quality product that appeals to quality conscious consumers at a median price point.

“Since people make a choice to wear promotional apparel, it’s incumbent on marketers to ensure it is a choice they’ll want to make.  Now is not the time to be penny wise and pound foolish; quality fashion-forward apparel will still outsell cheaper items because getting people to wear the items remains your ultimate goal.” Engel concluded.

California Winter - Energy Saving Ideas

Old man winter's already set in some parts of the country.  Here in California, the last couple of days has made me think of setting all our summer tank tops and flip flops aside to make room for the woolies and fleece, and the rainy weather apparel.  I'm not ready to turn the heater on just yet.  Perhaps a double dose of fleece will do for now.

Which made me search our top suppliers' new outerwear collections for the season.  We've discovered some cool items featured below.  Today's new finds are from brand ROSSIGNOL.

 

This extremely versatile  men's jacket is windproof, breathable and has all-over stretch. 91% polyester, 9% spandex. The sleeves are articulated for better active fit. While not fully waterproof, a durable, water-repellent finish makes light rain bead up and roll off. Zippered hand-warming pockets keep contents secure during activity. Brushed tricot chin-protector keeps the zipper from abrading chin and neck. Comfortable lightweight jacket for a broad range of temps (about 35-65 based on activity level - perfect for California). Center front closure uses a reverse-coil zipper and is backed with a wind flap for increased water and wind protection. Adjustable drawcord hem enables wearer to cinch the waist and block a draft from entering below.  The more fitted women's style is featured in red.

My Favorite Sweatshirt in New Colors

What to Wear This Summer

It's going to be a hot one- I have a feeling we're in for some really hot temps this summer. I was discussing this with a friend yesterday.  Flood, hurricanes and cyclones in parts of the world, and here in our part of the country, they just implemented mandatory water rationing.  To help alleviate the soon-to-be h-h-hot summer - let's get you all prepared and clothed appropriately. Private Label Apparel

Ever wonder how people start their t-shirt business?  When you see a clever saying on a shirt - do you get the feeling that you could've designed that?  Or come up with your own list of one-liners? Let us sort it out for you right here.

First - you have to figure out a NICHE market.  This should all be spelled out in your business plan. Are you going to cater to moms and babies?  Hip, young professionals with a sense of humor - or the more preppy type.  Once you have identified your demographic, you're over the first hurdle.

Second - how and WHERE will you sell your goods?  Do you have an online store?  Do you want to sell it through a retailer?  If so, getting your concept and design ideas in a DIGITAL PORTFOLIO might help you market your ideas. If this how you intend to market your product, make sure those you approach have some sort of Non-disclosure agreement.  That way, you protect your clever ideas.  Some samples and prototypes might help too.

Third - consult with a distributor/Ad specialist and establish a trusting relationship. (NOTE:  WEBBMAR is a distributor/ad specialist)   You can print in ready made apparel or your own Private Label.  Ad Specialty consultants have trusted suppliers and access to almost all the channel market garment mills.  We know where the shirts are, which mill in what state. We also work with imprinters who can decorate for you.  Ad Specialists are members of an industry with access to a huge network of suppliers, product and marketing information.  You have options of having your apparel made overseas (minimums apply) or imprinted domestically.  Either way, you will be given all the facts, quantities, pricing levels so you can plan accordingly.  It is best to start small, minimize overhead to get the max out of your cash.  It's also good to remember some basic Economics - like the rule of supply and demand. 

Fourth - BRANDING. BRANDING. BRANDING. You need to differentiate yourself from other brands.  What's cool and unique about your design. If you don't have a logo or a tagline yet, an ad specialist can help you with that.  A Private Label can be done here in the USA.  Once you've identified your 'brand logo and identity' - be consistent. (Sometimes, this is where you'll get stuck.  Remember, you'll own this image/logo for a long time, so once you give it a green light..remember you'll have to like it for a long time). You might want to ask your friends to wear some of your shirts as word of mouth is a form of 'viral marketing'.  A focus group made up of your true best friends can help critique. 

FIFTH - Product LAUNCH.  Consider a splashing debut for your 'collection'.  Create a buzz.  Generate curiosity.  Consider a trendy store or a progressive community. Consider 'limited supply'.  Create the 'i want that' need and slowly grow your business.

Here's to you and your bright, clever ideas!  May they all come to fruition!!  Set your dream in motion, envision your goal. Make it happen!
